Assessing School Support for Mental Health

This study developed and validated an instrument to measure school support factors influencing Ilokano college students’ mental health and academic well-being. Utilizing an exploratory mixed-method design, the study involved a qualitative phase with focus group discussions (FGDs) among teachers and students to generate questionnaire items, followed by a quantitative phase employing exploratory factor analysis (EFA) to identify key support factors. Six critical factors emerged: (1) Safe school environment with opportunities for personal growth and emotional support, (2) Inclusive and supportive school culture, (3) Presence of mental health professionals and gender-responsive school environment, (4) Accessibility and communication, physical health support, and academic breaks, (5) Conducive and accessible library services, and (6) Classroom capacity and adequate facilities. The findings highlight the essential role of a secure and inclusive school climate, mental health professionals, accessible resources, and well-equipped learning environments in fostering student success. The validated instrument ensures reliability and accuracy in assessing school support systems, providing a valuable tool for educators, policymakers, and mental health practitioners. This study underscores the need for holistic interventions, gender-sensitive mental health strategies, and interdisciplinary collaboration to enhance student well-being and academic performance.
