Palyno‐Morphological Studies of Selected Capparis Tourn. ex L. (Capparaceae) Species From India and Its Taxonomic Implications

ABSTRACT The genus Capparis (Capparaceae) is a taxonomically complex group with significant medicinal and economic value. Although macro‐morphological traits are standard for identification, micromorphological pollen features are essential for clarifying interspecific relationships. This study examines the pollen morphology of 15 Indian Capparis species using light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results, derived from both quantitative and qualitative analyses, categorized by the NPC system, reveal that all species possess tricolporate grains, though they vary in shape, size, exine thickness, and ornamentation. A palynology‐based dendrogram aligns closely with morpho‐molecular evolutionary patterns. These findings offer critical data for sectional delimitation, reinforce current taxonomic frameworks, and clarify the evolutionary history of the genus.
