Empowering stakeholders and the dangers of normative science and stealth advocacy
The purpose of this mini-review commentary is to elevate the quality of dialogue among stakeholders who are focussed on meeting energy demands. Rising demand for energy has spurred interest in expanding technologies including refinements in nuclear energy facilities, particularly small modular reactors (SMRs). Promotion of SMRs has focused extensively on explaining the technological advances. This commentary explores the importance of stakeholder engagement and makes a plea to avoid the trappings of normative science and stealth advocacy. If genuine engagement of stakeholders can be achieved, the stage can be set to accommodate and address the critical concerns of all affected stakeholders.
