Unified Emergence Theory A Precise Dynamical Framework Across Hierarchical Levels and Timescales

Emergence—the appearance of qualitatively novel macroscopic properties from microscopic interactions—remains a fundamental challenge for physics, biology, neuroscience, and the social sciences. Existing theories address individual facets but lack a unified cross-level, cross-timescale, and cross-disciplinary dynamics framework. This paper proposes the Unified Emergence Theory (UET), built on five core components: (i) a binary stochastic microfoundation as the universal substrate of complex systems; (ii) a three-timescale enabling-cultivating-expressing hierarchy that distinguishes structural potential, developmental realization, and real-time expression; (iii) a three-level emergence classification (weak / medium / strong) with three subtypes of medium emergence corresponding to ant colonies, wolf packs, and chimpanzee groups; (iv) a five-class precise classification of phase transitions (pure first-order, percolative second-order fast, multi-cluster second-order slow, internal head escape, and true hybrid Type 2X→1) with quantitative discrimination criteria; and (v) a variational principle foundation expressed through a complexity action functional that unifies seven existing variational principles.UET advances four central propositions. First, strong emergence requires cross-scale coupling as a necessary condition; power-law (scale-free) topology is sufficient but not necessary. Topological requirements differentiate by phase transition type: fast first-order transitions (Global Workspace broadcasting, instantaneous recognition, pain perception, attention switching) require fast broadcasting channels but not power-law distributions; slow Type 2X→1 transitions (state formation, insight moments, Piagetian stage transitions) require critical topology and cross-scale coupling. Second, the number of phase transitions is a level-relative concept: N(system, X_i) depends on the observed level, with downward mapping rules governing cross-level event aggregation. Third, state formation and state collapse are bidirectionally symmetric Type 2X→1 phase transitions at the level of state-as-emergent-entity; multi-cluster coupling drives both directions. Fourth, cumulative culture (ratchet effect) is the unique bottleneck distinguishing Homo sapiens from other species: D_dim_max_effective = D_dim_max_genetic · (1 + R_ratchet)^N_generation amplifies small genetic differences into vast emergence-level differences across generations. The theory provides a three-tier falsifiability framework with twenty-five testable predictions across thirteen experimental designs, integrating phenomena from quantum criticality to civilization transition under one mathematical structure. UET preserves the validity of existing theories—Integrated Information Theory, Global Workspace Theory, Free Energy Principle, Self-Organized Criticality, Onsager and Maximum Entropy Production, Watts-Strogatz small-world networks, Barabási-Albert scale-free networks—as special cases, degenerate forms, or single-component instantiations of its broader framework.
