Local infrastructures as boundary objects: building a non-proprietary Open Science framework at the University of Milan

This presentation was delivered at the OPERAS 2026 & SCIROS Conference and presents the case of the University of Milan in developing a non-proprietary and open infrastructural ecosystem, building on the experience of the Milano University Press (MUP). Framed through the concept of infrastructures as boundary objects, the presentation discusses how open-source tools, open metadata, repositories, monitoring platforms, and community-governed services can connect heterogeneous actors and practices without enforcing standardisation. Particular attention is devoted to diamond open access publishing, FAIR data management and stewardship, interoperability and realibility of information on research, and the role of networks of practices in supporting collaborative and non-extractive models of scholarly communication. The presentation also reflects on the limits of institution-led approaches in fragmented national contexts and highlights the need for coordinated public investment and sustainable scholarly communities.
