Locating Nazeer Akbarabadi in the Tradition of Nature Poetry: A Study of Nature as Shared Human Inheritance in Select Poems
Nazeer Akbarabadi, popularly known as ‘people’s poet’ holds a place of distinction in Urdu poetry for his celebration of everyday life, common people, and the natural world. His poems treat nature as an important and democratic force that can help build shared values. This is different from the traditional Persian-influenced lyrical tradition, which mostly centered on courtly love and abstract ideas. In Nazeer’s poetic world nature provides a shared cultural environment that unites diverse communities across religious, social, and economic divides. His poems explore the life of ordinary people, seasonal cycles, fruits, animals, and festivals rooted in natural elements, symbolising coexistence, equality, and mutual dependence. According to Nazeer, nature is a resource that unites everyone and serves as a moral, social, and spiritual teacher, reminding people of their shared roots, humility, and joy. A thorough textual analysis of the select poems tries to establish the idea how nature plays an inherently communal and ethical role in his poetic vision, resisting division and asserting a harmonious social fabric. Nazeer thus emerges as a poet of inclusivity, whose ecology-centric worldview has enduring relevance in contemporary times marked by communal fragmentation.
