General Nonlinear Lattice Field Theory: Isotropic Restoration, Topological Defects, and Active Non-Reciprocal Dynamics

We introduce a generalized class of nonlinear lattice field theories on ℤ³ constructed from symmetry-constrained effective field theory principles. The framework incorporates a complex U(1) scalar background field χ coupled to a real-valued high-frequency energy field E. By enforcing global phase invariance and low-order power-counting compatibility, we present a minimal symmetry-compatible effective Lagrangian for such coupled multi-component media. Through a formal multiscale asymptotic expansion, we derive the long-wavelength continuum limit of the lattice medium, demonstrating that an optimized 27-point discrete Laplacian stencil suppresses leading-order grid anisotropy up to O(a⁴) to yield a cubic-quintic Nonlinear Schrödinger (CQ-NLS) envelope equation. Furthermore, we break Hermiticity while preserving space-time reflection (PT) symmetry by introducing balanced profiles of localized real-valued gain and loss across spatial parity mirrors. Numerical evidence suggests that past an Exceptional Point bifurcation, these non-Hermitian configurations alter the Vakhitov–Kolokolov stability criteria, causing discrete breathers to behave phenomenologically as robust, self-healing limit-cycle configurations. When coupled with a dimerized lattice layout, the system manifests transport signatures consistent with non-Hermitian skin effect phenomenology, enabling non-reciprocal, unidirectional soliton transport. Keywords: nonlinear lattice field theory, discrete solitons, 27-point stencil, PT-symmetry, non-Hermitian skin effect, Floquet stability, topological defects

Abstract

We introduce a generalized class of nonlinear lattice field theories on ℤ³ constructed from symmetry-constrained effective field theory principles. The framework incorporates a complex U(1) scalar background field χ coupled to a real-valued high-frequency energy field E. By enforcing global phase invariance and low-order power-counting compatibility, we present a minimal symmetry-compatible effective Lagrangian for such coupled multi-component media. Through a formal multiscale asymptotic expansion, we derive the long-wavelength continuum limit of the lattice medium, demonstrating that an optimized 27-point discrete Laplacian stencil suppresses leading-order grid anisotropy up to O(a⁴) to yield a cubic-quintic Nonlinear Schrödinger (CQ-NLS) envelope equation. Furthermore, we break Hermiticity while preserving space-time reflection (PT) symmetry by introducing balanced profiles of localized real-valued gain and loss across spatial parity mirrors. Numerical evidence suggests that past an Exceptional Point bifurcation, these non-Hermitian configurations alter the Vakhitov–Kolokolov stability criteria, causing discrete breathers to behave phenomenologically as robust, self-healing limit-cycle configurations. When coupled with a dimerized lattice layout, the system manifests transport signatures consistent with non-Hermitian skin effect phenomenology, enabling non-reciprocal, unidirectional soliton transport. Keywords: nonlinear lattice field theory, discrete solitons, 27-point stencil, PT-symmetry, non-Hermitian skin effect, Floquet stability, topological defects
