Quantitative Access Stack: Vendor Synchronisation, Rotation Lag, and Compounding Information Asymmetry

This paper identifies two structural mechanisms driving the quantitative access gap between institutional asset managers and financial advisors- mechanisms absent from the existing alpha decay literature. The first is Vendor Synchronisation Decay (VSD): when independent quant desks share upstream data infrastructure, a vendor methodology update shifts their signals simultaneously regardless of strategic differentiation. Crowding metrics will not detect this because position overlap is zero. The covariance spike is real. The source is the data layer, not the strategy layer. The second is the Structural Rotation Lag: institutional quant desks operate a fast execution cycle (rebalancing every few business days) and a slower model update cycle (refreshing factor architecture roughly every six months). Financial advisors- defined here as independent practitioners consuming packaged institutional signal outputs rather than generating their own- have neither cycle. The downstream products they rely on carry an architectural lag of six to twelve months estimated from intermediation chain analysis. If confirmed, advisors are not merely behind institutional positioning. They are systematically buying what institutions are selling. To map where these mechanisms create exploitable gaps, this paper introduces the Quantitative Access Stack (QAS): a four-layer diagnostic framework covering Data Access and Aggregation, Factor Construction and Structuring, Signal Generation and Validation, and Adaptive Feedback and Decay Management. Each layer carries an explicit Consequence of Absence- the specific portfolio risk that materialises when that capability is missing. A product gap analysis across ten platforms confirms no advisor-native product addresses all four layers in an integrated workflow. A companion paper will test the VSD and rotation lag hypotheses empirically and develop the platform architecture required to close the gap.
