A Note on the Instability of Galerkin Orthogonal Projections via Metric Mismatch

This research note provides a self-contained, geometrically intuitive counterexample to the uniform boundedness and stability of orthogonal projections within Galerkin approximation schemes. By exploring the structural divergence between the L^2 Hilbert space metric and the uniform supremum norm of continuous functions, we explicitly formalize how the growth of Lebesgue constants triggers an operator norm explosion. This phenomenon, characterized here as a "metric mismatch," provides a transparent foundational alternative to complex Sobolev-space counterexamples typically found in finite element literature. The note clarifies why stability must be actively enforced via explicit stability conditions (such as the inf-sup condition) rather than expected as a natural consequence of orthogonal projections.
