The Theseus Agent Thesis: Identity and Memory as the Permanents of AI Agency

This preprint presents the Theseus Agent Thesis: for durable, trust-bearing AI agents, identity and memory are the only necessary permanents. The paper connects the Ship of Theseus, the Sorites paradox, Turing's oracle machine, persistent agent memory, agent identity, and zero-trust governance to argue for a transition from anonymous agent swarms to structured agent organizations.

Abstract

This preprint presents the Theseus Agent Thesis: for durable, trust-bearing AI agents, identity and memory are the only necessary permanents. The paper connects the Ship of Theseus, the Sorites paradox, Turing's oracle machine, persistent agent memory, agent identity, and zero-trust governance to argue for a transition from anonymous agent swarms to structured agent organizations.
