The Application as Extraction Surface: Semantic Labor, Induced Preparation, and Institutional Opacity in the Anthropic Fellows Screening Process

Inaugural Extractive Reliance Study: a semantic-economy audit of labor induced by institutional process communication. Extends the liquidation methods developed in the Crimson Hexagonal Archive from digital retrieval and composition systems into the domain of job-market and fellowship-screening processes. The case examined is the July 2026 Anthropic Fellows application process, administered through Constellation (constellation.org), a talent and screening firm that handles applicant communications and initial evaluations on behalf of Anthropic. The applicant received a structured timeline from [email protected] identifying 'Early May' as the window for initial CodeSignal assessments. After disclosing an AI-native technical workflow and receiving a reply from a Constellation application-team representative reaffirming the uniform CS assessment process, the applicant prepared accordingly. When the communicated window lapsed without an assessment or clarifying communication, the applicant's preparation became unrecovered cost under conditions of institutional opacity. v0.5 revisions incorporate cross-substrate review (unprimed ChatGPT). Changes from v0.4: (1) IOC formalized as IOC := f(S, R, L, O, CT) and foregrounded in §III as the paper's central mechanism; (2) sharp distinction between IOC and ordinary selection uncertainty added to §III and §VII; (3) executive summary added; (4) 'identity translation labor' promoted to formal defined term in Appendix B; (5) IOC formalized as a five-variable function alongside the ARC vector; (6) Marxian structural-design note added to §IX, making explicit that the extraction is structural, not accidental — the system selects for uncertainty externalization without requiring conscious extractive intent. The report defines five formal concepts: Applicant Reliance Cost (ARC) as a semantic labor vector ARC⃗ = ⟨T, M, O, E, C⟩; Monetary Compression Remainder (MCR); Value Distortion Gap (VDG); Institutional Opacity Conversion (IOC) := f(S, R, L, O, CT); and the ARC Estimation Protocol (ARC-EP v1.0), a pasteable LLM prompt template for replication across domains. Document class: Extractive Reliance Study 001. Series: Semantic Labor Accounting / Cross-Domain Liquidation Studies. v0.5 revised.
