“Whirled Cervix” Sign in the Diagnosis of Uterine Torsion
When identified on cross-sectional imaging, the “whirled cervix” sign is diagnostic of uterine torsion. Uterine torsion is uncommon, rarely encountered in nongravid patients, and can result in life-threatening consequences if left untreated. Given the nonspecific clinical presentation and physical examination findings that accompany uterine torsion, imaging is key to detecting this rare but important condition preoperatively. We share two cases of uterine torsion in nongravid patients that highlight the importance of the whirled cervix sign for diagnosing uterine torsion on CT and MRI.
