The Minimum Implementation of Reframing: Context Disposal as the Bridge Between AGI and Metacognition
This paper advances three propositions that form a deductive chain linking artificial generalintelligence, reframing, context disposal, and metacognition. Proposition 1: the realization ofAGI is defined not by benchmark performance but by the acquisition of reframing capacity—theability to revise the interpretive framework through which inputs are processed. Proposition 2:the minimum implementation of reframing is selective context disposal—the authority to declaresome currently held context no longer binding—reducing reframing from a cognitive capacity toan information-processing primitive. Proposition 3: deliberate context disposal, as opposed torandom corruption, requires metacognitive evaluation—scrutiny of one’s own representational stateto determine what to discard and what to retain—thereby providing an operational definition ofmetacognition without appeal to consciousness. The chain establishes that metacognition is notan optional feature of generally intelligent systems but a structural prerequisite. The architecturalconsequences of this chain—in particular, the question of how to bound the effects of contextdisposal while preserving the reframing capacity that constitutes general reasoning—are identifiedas the central challenge for future work.
