DEMOGRAPHIC SITUATION IN THE NORTHERN CITIES OF RUSSIA IN 2014-2023

This article presents a comprehensive analysis of the demographic situation in northern Russian cities over the ten-year period from 2014 to 2023. The objective of the study is to identify the factors influencing population dynamics in northern cities under current conditions. Key trends in population reproduction, migration dynamics, and overall population change are identified for all 140 northern cities. A grouping of cities based on demographic development patterns for 2014–2023 is proposed. It has been established that the demographic situation in the Far North is characterized by high territorial differentiation. The most stable demographic indicators are observed in the largest oil and gas centers of Western Siberia and the administrative centers of northern regions, where relatively high-income levels, investment activity, and migration attractiveness are maintained. At the same time, a significant number of old industrial, single-industry, and peripheral cities are demonstrating steady population decline due to migration outflow and population aging.
