An Instance of Amateur Cinema in Andalusia: The Films of Enrique Queipo de Llano

Largely free of commercial strictures and governmental regulations, amateur cinema can provide a distinct vision of a historical moment in a particular geography. While Catalonia is often and rightfully conceived as a birthplace and hub of amateur cinema in Spain, Enrique Queipo de Llano is an amateur filmmaker from Malaga whose films from the 1970s offer nuanced insights into amateur cinema culture, as well as into the cultures of Andalusia and Spain. By examining a select number of Queipo’s films, I consider categories of amateur cinema and how amateur cinema in Spain suggests that there were different ways of seeing and filming in which amateur filmmakers engaged in a kind of democratic practice at a localized and individual level outside of commercial cinema and beyond the censorship of the Franco regime. Abstract
