Development of Methods for Non-Destructive Hydrogenation of LaFe13–xSix Compounds

Hydrogenation regimes for brittle samples of the La(Fe, Si)13 system, which have a phase transition temperature near room temperature and enable the required compressive strength values to be achieved for successful application in multi-stimulus magnetic refrigeration cycles, were tested. Direct measurements of the magnetocaloric effect and stress-strain relationships for cast and hydrogenated LaFe11.6–xSi1.4 (x = 0–3) alloys were used to determine the optimal content of the reinforcing phase of the iron-silicon substitution solid solution in the BCC lattice.

Abstract

Hydrogenation regimes for brittle samples of the La(Fe, Si)13 system, which have a phase transition temperature near room temperature and enable the required compressive strength values to be achieved for successful application in multi-stimulus magnetic refrigeration cycles, were tested. Direct measurements of the magnetocaloric effect and stress-strain relationships for cast and hydrogenated LaFe11.6–xSi1.4 (x = 0–3) alloys were used to determine the optimal content of the reinforcing phase of the iron-silicon substitution solid solution in the BCC lattice.
