Effect of Coix lacryma-jobi added brake pad ceramic composite on braking performance behavior

Studies have focused on brake pads, an element of the brake system in our age, which do not contain asbestos or its derivatives and contain components that do not harm human health or the environment. This study used Coix lacryma-jobi material, a sustainable and environmentally friendly raw material, as a friction modifier to produce brake pad samples via hot-pressing. 0%-3%-6%-9% Coix lacryma-jobi material was used at varying rates in the brake pad sample contents. The friction coefficient and wear rates were measured in the fen pad test apparatus to assess the braking capability of the manufactured brake pad samples. The samples’ worn surfaces were investigated by scanning electron microscopy to determine their friction coefficients. Among the developed samples, the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solutions (TOPSIS) method, one of the multiple decision-making methods, was used to determine the pad sample with the most suitable parameter values. The TOPSIS decision-making method considered the friction coefficient, wear rate, hardness, and disc roughness values obtained from the brake pad test results. The TOPSIS analysis indicated that the most suitable brake pad sample was the one containing 3% Coix lacryma-jobi .
