A Retinal ON-Pathway Mechanism Underlying Accommodative Overload Induced by the Spectral Composition of LED Lighting

Can the spectral deficiency of an artificial light source be an independent factor in the progression of myopia? The present work assembles a chain of previously established facts in the following sequence: the optical system of the eye — the mechanism of focusing at near distances — the contrast signal as the feedback variable — the formation of the contrast signal at photopic illuminance levels — the architecture of retinal rod–cone interaction — the discrepancy between the classical model of visual regimes and the experimental data — the mechanism explaining this discrepancy and predicting the observed visual phenomena. The chain rests on the work of several independent research groups and does not introduce new empirical data; its content lies in establishing the connection between them.
