Experimental and Analytical Evaluation of Steel Frame Collapse Resistance with Corrugated Web H-Beams under an Internal Column Removal Scenario

H-shaped steel beams with corrugated webs (CWs) have been applied extensively in the construction industry for various structural applications owing to their distinctive advantages. However, their anticollapse performance has not been explored thoroughly compared with that of steel frames with flat webs (FWs). This paper presents experimental and analytical investigations to determine the anticollapse behavior and evaluate the collapse resistance of steel frames with CWs under a middle-column-removal scenario. Two beam–column assemblies, one with FWs and the other with and CWs, were subjected to static testing. The load responses, failure modes, deflection characteristic, internal forces, and mechanisms of resistance development in both specimens were comprehensively analyzed and compared. The tests results indicated that the internal forces generated in Specimen FW were contributed by of the beam flange and web, whereas the bending moment in Specimen CW was provided predominantly by the beam flange, and the axial force generated in the CW H-beam was not significant compared with that of the FW H-beam owing to its accordion effect. Furthermore, a comprehensive derivation of the load–displacement calculation formula for the entire collapse process of steel frames with CW is presented, and its effectiveness and universality were validated using numerical examples, demonstrating its utility for collapse-resistance evaluation, and it can be regarded as an important reference for the anticollapse design of steel frames with CW H-beams.
