Shifts in Reader Positions on the Possibility of Dialogue with Russia: An Analysis of Comments in the Finnish Newspaper Helsingin Sanomat

This article examines how the question of possible dialogue with Russia was framed in Helsingin Sanomat (HS) articles and reader comments from 2022 to April 2026. Using a standardized content analysis of a thematic sample of 32 HS articles and 1,522 comments, it focuses not on the broader Finland–Russia agenda or Finnish public opinion as a whole, but on how the idea of acceptable, limited, and politically coordinated contact with Russia took shape within the selected media environment. The findings show that by April 2026 the issue of future dialogue had become more visible and more thematically focused within the corpus. The central shift was not toward support for immediate normalization, but toward a conditional model of future contact, in which the key issue was not whether contact should resume immediately, but under what political and security conditions a future channel could become permissible.
