Professionalizing under pressure: “compressed” training and education and the erosion of foundational analytic competencies in Israeli Defence Intelligence
Intelligence organisations must balance deployable skills with education for professional judgement. This article examines Israel Defence Intelligence’s entry-level analyst course (IAS) during 2006–2025, asking how its curriculum changed, what drove it, and how it reshaped analyst competencies. Using IAS yearbooks, qualitative content analysis, quantitative coding of cohorts, and validation by commanders, it identifies a shift from language, regional knowledge, and interpretive reasoning towards data access and processing. Compressed timelines, weak doctrine, and instructor autonomy enabled adaptation but reduced attention to foundations, thus contextualising vulnerabilities exposed on 7 October 2023 and showing why professional formation must continue beyond entry training.
