VHDL design of the fixed-function bidirectional universal shift register IC 74HC194 with extended storage capacity

This manuscript focuses on the VHDL (Very High-Speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language) programming of a fixed-function digital integrated circuit (IC) that performs specific operations for storing and shifting data, as well as its simulation using computer-based tools prior to implementation on an FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array). Fixed-function ICs are efficient for implementing small, dedicated tasks in specific applications. However, using VHDL design to implement fixed-function digital circuits enables greater flexibility on programmable logic devices compared to manual circuit design. The fixed-function IC 74HC194 is designed to operate as a bidirectional universal shift register that supports several data movement modes, depending on the selecting of its mode using control inputs. The VHDL design of the 74HC194 can be extended to design a universal shift register with higher storage capacity-achieved by cascading multiple ICs-tailored to specific application needs. The functionality of the fixed-function IC 74HC194 is modeled using VHDL and implemented on an FPGA platform for prototyping and performance analysis. Before deploying designs to hardware, it is essential to simulate VHDL-coded circuits using appropriate software tools to verify their behavior under different operating conditions. The use of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools during the design phase enhances both the efficiency and accuracy of digital systems. Simulation results of the designed bidirectional universal shift registers with varying storage capacities help evaluate performance and identify potential design issues.
