A new drag and lift correlation for spherocylinders from fully resolved Immersed Boundary Method

Abstract Many industrial processes deal with non‐spherical particles, e.g., mineral mining and biomass conversion. It is crucial to understand the particles' hydrodynamics to control and optimize these processes. To extend the current state‐of‐the‐art from arrays of spherical particles to spherocylindrical particles, we performed extensive particle‐resolved computational fluid dynamics simulations to obtain the drag and lift forces on static assemblies. In the 1,500 simulations, the aspect ratio (), Reynolds number (), and solid fraction () are varied for investigation. Simulation data are fitted for new correlations of drag force for both spheres (error = 1.3%) and spherocylinders (error = 9.7%) and lift force (error = 5.0%). In addition, spherocylinders in random arrays exhibit large variance in the drag force related to local flow phenomena, which is quantified in a novel correlation.
