Extended Electrodynamics and Quantum Information Field Theory: Toward a Unified Interpretation of Transverse, Longitudinal, and Scalar Wave Modes

Classical electrodynamics predicts that electromagnetic waves in vacuum propagate as purely transverse modes, a result that follows from the symmetry constraints embedded in Maxwell’s equations. However, developments in Quantum Field Theory, Plasma Physics, and Gauge Theory, together with extensions such as Axion Electrodynamics, demonstrate the physical relevance of scalar fields, longitudinal modes, and scalar–vector couplings. These advances suggest that the conventional restriction to transverse electromagnetic waves is not fundamental but arises from specific symmetry conditions. This paper proposes Quantum Information Field Theory (QIFT) as a unifying framework in which all wave modes—transverse, longitudinal, and scalar—are interpreted as emergent excitations of an underlying quantum information field, described in terms of an infon density function. A generalized field equation is introduced, from which distinct wave modes arise through symmetry constraints and environmental conditions. It is shown that classical Maxwell electrodynamics, scalar field dynamics, plasma oscillations, and axion-like interactions can be recovered as limiting cases of the QIFT formalism. The framework predicts the possibility of mode coupling, modified dispersion relations, and scalar–vector interaction signatures in systems where symmetry constraints are relaxed. These predictions are consistent with existing experimental domains, including plasma diagnostics, condensed matter systems, and axion detection experiments. At the same time, QIFT maintains compatibility with established physical principles, including Lorentz invariance and causality. While the formalism remains in a developmental stage, particularly in its mathematical completeness and empirical specificity, QIFT provides a conceptually coherent approach to extended electrodynamics by reframing diverse wave phenomena within a single informational ontology. This work establishes a foundation for further theoretical refinement and experimental exploration of unified wave dynamics.
