Motivation Theory Under Confucian-Heritage Exam Pressure: A Cross-Cultural Synthesis of Self-Determination, Expectancy-Value, and Achievement-Goal Frameworks for Vietnamese

Three motivation frameworks dominate adolescent education research: Self-Determination Theory (SDT; Deci and Ryan), Expectancy-Value Theory (EVT; Eccles and Wigfield), and Achievement Goal Theory (AGT; Dweck, Nicholls, Elliot). Each was developed and validated almost entirely in WEIRD (Western, educated, industrialised, rich, democratic) samples. Vietnamese adolescents in the 14–19 band live inside a different motivational environment: a Confucian-heritage cultural script in which academic performance is fused with filial duty, a highstakes exam regime (the lớp 10 entrance and the kỳ thi tốt nghiệp THPT) that compresses identity into a single observable score, and a parental-teacher reinforcement system that systematically rewards extrinsic compliance and punishes deviation from the official trajectory. This paper synthesises the WEIRD-aware literature on the three frameworks and on Confucian-heritage learner research (Watkins-Biggs, Salili, Ho, Tao-Hong, HauSalili, Iyengar-Lepper, Hofstede) to produce per-framework verdicts on what replicates, what breaks, and what requires cultural reframing for Vietnamese guidance content. The Sisk and Plomin 2018 meta-analysis on growth mindset is treated as a corrective: the strong 2006 Dweck claim is not carried into this synthesis, and the operational implication for Vietnamese guidance is to avoid framing mindset as a high-leverage intervention. The paper's substantive contribution is the autonomyas-relational reframing: SDT's autonomy construct is preserved as a need but its surface form is reinterpreted as relationallylocated (volitional endorsement of family-embedded goals) rather than as Western-individualist independence (volitional rejection of external direction). The corresponding mastery construct is reframed as filial mastery — competence directed toward familyhonouring outcomes is not extrinsic by definition. Six operational implications for Layer I guidance content are derived: detect motivation collapse before exam-cycle terminal events, refuse the symmetric extrinsic-versus-intrinsic dichotomy, instal autonomysupportive parent and teacher scripts in culturally legible form, treat performance-avoidance goals as the primary risk pattern, address student burnout per Salmela-Aro 2019 not via individual resilience but via demand-resource recalibration, and replace mindset-praise interventions with concrete competence-building feedback. No cohort empirics are produced; the synthesis is WEIRD-aware literature analysis only and operates under the elix-researches no-cohort scope pivot.
