Pandoc Pipeline Configurations for Vietnamese Educational Publishing: PDF, EPUB, HTML

The Document Engineering Vol 2 textbook (Markdown for Educational Writing, audience 14+, Vietnameselanguage) requires a publication pipeline that lets a single Markdown source produce three deliverables — a print-quality PDF, an EPUB3 ebook, and a standalone HTML page — without the author re-editing the source per output. The pipeline must preserve Vietnamese diacritics across the three outputs at the codepoint level, support four citation styles in common use (APA 7, IEEE, Vancouver, and a Vietnameseacademic style modelled on TCVN 7217-1 / ISO 690 as adopted by the VNU Journal of Science author guidelines), produce a Microsoft Word .docx for teacher review as an auxiliary output, and remain reproducible across operating systems. This paper specifies that pipeline anchored on Pandoc [1], [2]. Three first-edition configurations are defined: PDF via XeLaTeX with polyglossia + fontspec [3], [4] and TeX Gyre / Noto fonts for Vietnamese coverage [5]; EPUB3 conforming to the W3C 2023 Recommendation [6] with embedded XHTML and embedded fonts; and a self-contained HTML5 file using the WHATWG HTML Living Standard [7]. Each pipeline is presented with its Pandoc command line, required filters and templates, CSL style selection rule [8], [9], Vietnamese diacritic fidelity test, imagehandling rule, font-fallback chain, and YAML metadata block. The Word docx output is treated as a fourth derivative produced by the same source — not a first-edition pipeline but a teacherreview affordance produced by a one-flag variation of the PDF pipeline. An auxiliary companion-template directory layout is specified for the Vol 2 advanced chapters, locating the shared YAML metadata, CSL files, LaTeX preamble, EPUB CSS, and HTML CSS in a single tree. The first edition deliberately ships three outputs; an expansion roadmap (Beamer slides, reveal.js / Slidev presentations, ODT, JATS XML, plain LaTeX-source distribution) is sketched in section 5.4. The paper-grade target is rigor at audit standard, not venue submission.
