Contemporary Digital Impressions in Pediatric Dentistry

Digital intraoral impressions have revolutionized pediatric dentistry by providing a modern, patient-friendly alternative to conventional impression techniques. Intraoral scanners (IOS) capture highly accurate three-dimensional images of the oral cavity, reducing the discomfort, gag reflex, anxiety, and chairside time commonly associated with traditional impression materials. These advantages are particularly beneficial in children, where patient cooperation and comfort play a crucial role in successful dental treatment. The present overview highlights the applications, advantages, and clinical significance of contemporary digital impressions in pediatric dentistry. IOS technology enables precise digital models for diagnosis, treatment planning, preventive care, and interceptive orthodontics. It is widely used in the fabrication of stainless steel crowns, space maintainers, transparent aligners, habit-breaking appliances, and digital study models. The digital workflow also improves communication between clinicians, dental laboratories, parents, and patients by providing real-time visualization and enhanced record storage. Compared with conventional impressions, digital scanning offers superior patient acceptance and minimizes procedural errors related to material distortion or storage. Advancements in optical imaging systems and software integration have further improved scanning speed, accuracy, and efficiency. Additionally, digital impressions contribute to eco-friendly and paperless dental practice management. Despite the numerous benefits, certain limitations such as high initial cost, learning curve, and difficulty in scanning uncooperative children or subgingival margins remain challenges for practitioners. However, continuous technological advancements are expected to overcome these barriers and expand the scope of digital dentistry in pediatric care. Contemporary digital impressions represent a significant leap toward precise, efficient, and child-centered oral healthcare, emphasizing the growing role of digital technology in modern pediatric dentistry.
