The Role of Deepfake Technology in Voice Phishing Attacks: Emerging threats and Cyber Security Countermeasures
This project investigates the role of deepfake voice technology in the evolution of vishing attacks, focusing on the interaction between AI capabilities and human behavioural vulnerabilities. A mixed-methods approach was used, combining fraud datasets, questionnaire findings, and real-world case study analysis. The results identify a clear gap between user awareness and secure behaviour, while demonstrating that AI enhances traditional social engineering techniques. Based on these findings, a dual framework of mitigation strategies for both individuals and organisations are proposed. The study concludes that AI-enabled vishing represents a growing cybersecurity threat requiring combined technological and behavioural countermeasures.
