Individualized Homeopathic Management of Generalized Anxiety Disorder Using LM Potencies: A Case Series of Three Patients
Abstract Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a distressing mental health condition characterized by persistent and excessive worry that surpasses specific triggers. Anxiety disorders can lead to work and school absences and present a larger cost burden than other psychiatric disorders due to their higher prevalence of around 642 million sufferers globally. The usefulness of Homeopathy in GAD has been studied to some extent, but the approach and posology are not discussed. Three individuals who presented with symptoms of free-floating anxiety and autonomic symptoms were diagnosed with GAD based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition criteria. The cases were analyzed systematically and treated with individualized homeopathic medicines in fifty millesimal potencies. Detailed case assessments were conducted using standardized record forms, and symptom analysis followed by repertorization utilizing RADAR Opus software and medicines Magnesium carb, Calcarea mur, and Pulsatilla nigricans were selected based on the repertorial totality and final consultation with materia medica and prescribed in LM (Q) potencies starting with 0/1. Severity at baseline and progress were evaluated monthly using the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAM-A). The World Health Organization Quality of Life brief version (WHO QoL BREF) was administered once in 6 months. MONARCH inventory was used for eliciting a causal relationship between the homeopathic intervention and outcome. A significant reduction in HAM-A scores and WHO QoL BREF scores was noted after treatment, indicating the usefulness of individualized homeopathic treatment in GAD. HAM-A scores of 49, 27, and 48 at baseline turned to 0, 5, and 0, respectively, at the end of the 1-year observation period. These findings offer initial evidence supporting the utility of millesimal potencies of individualized homeopathic medicines in managing GAD and highlight the importance of further research in this field.
