Nanoparticles, Big Smiles—Transforming Dentistry with Nanotechnology: A Review

Nanotechnology has revolutionized biomedical science, offering materials with unique physical and biological properties at dimensions below 100 nm.This review highlights the integration of nanoparticles in dentistry.Literature retrieval was undertaken from PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, using keywords including nanotechnology, nanoparticles, dentistry, restorative materials, caries prevention, and endodontics.Publications in English from 2000 to 2024 were considered, with emphasis on peer-reviewed clinical, in vitro, and review articles.Findings show that various nanoparticles enhance antibacterial action and remineralization. In nanoparticle-based sealers, nano-diamond gutta-percha and nanoscaffolds show promise for improved disinfection and tissue regeneration. However, potential cytotoxicity and long-term safety concerns remain. In conclusion, nanotechnology is reshaping dental practice by enhancing material performance and enabling regenerative strategies.Despite promising outcomes, further investigations are required to ensure safety and optimize translation into everyday dentistry.Clinical significance: Nanotechnology in dentistry enhances antibacterial activity, remineralization, and mechanical properties of materials while offering novel approaches in endodontics and tissue regeneration.Integrating these advancements can help clinicians deliver safer, more predictable, and biologically compatible treatments.
