Epic Cognition Theory: A Unified Framework for Evolutionary Design Through Symbolic Cognition

Epic Cognition Theory (ECT) is a transdisciplinary framework proposing that symbolic cognition—rooted in dreams, poetic expression, and metaphorical simulation—constitutes the primary biological engine of human evolution. Grounded in a 23-year controlled autoethnographic experiment, ECT reframes autism and schizoid states not as pathologies but as adaptive evolutionary mechanisms: autism provides the neurobiological infrastructure for heightened symbolic sensitivity, while the schizoid phase functions as the transformative process through which this sensitivity is reorganized into new cognitive architecture. The theory identifies structural equivalence between the schizoid process, shamanic initiation, and the experiential origins of religious revelation—arguing that what has historically been attributed to divine agency is fully accounted for by a naturalistic, neurobiologically grounded mechanism involving mirror neuron dysregulation, tiered dream architecture (D-0 to D-5), biophotonic emissions, and epigenetic transmission. ECT presents a six-stage model of symbolic evolution—observation, design, ritualized behavior, mutation, genetic transmission, and natural selection—in which each species actively participates in its own adaptive redesign through dream-based symbolic simulation. Unlike conventional evolutionary models that position organisms as passive recipients of environmental selection, ECT proposes a universal framework in which the capacity for internal simulation—whether expressed as visual dreaming in mammals, sonar-based proto-narratives in bats, or sensory-motor rehearsal in reptiles—functions as the primary generative mechanism of adaptive change across species. This framework is empirically anchored by cross-cultural evidence such as Moken and Bajau sea nomad populations, where cultural myths demonstrably correlate with physiological adaptations, and by behavioral-genetic studies confirming epigenetic links between symbolic practice and biological resilience. ECT further advances the concept of Cognitive Sovereignty: the capacity of the individual to consciously navigate their own symbolic transformation rather than passively inhabiting the inherited myth of an ancestor. By providing a complete mechanistic account of its origins, ECT renders religion obsolete as an explanatory system while relocating its experiential content from the domain of supernatural authority to the domain of individual cognitive evolution—positioning symbolic self-design, rather than inherited doctrine, as the foundation of human transformation. As a transdisciplinary synthesis bridging the gaps between quantum mechanics, neurobiology, anthropology, psychiatry, and evolutionary theory, ECT stands as a strong candidate for the 'Theory of Everything'.
