3D-printed continuous hybrid fiber reinforced honeycomb structures with high compression resistance and energy absorption performance

Composite honeycomb structure could be used as a safe storage of Li-ion batteries, in which high compression resistance and energy absorption are usually required. In this paper a material extrusion-based 3D printing process for honeycomb structures with continuous hybrid carbon and Kevlar fibers has been investigated and compared with non-hybrid structures. These structures were tested in compression at quasi-static rates of strain in X, Y , and Z directions respectively. It was found that hybrids showed the maximum compression force in all directions especially CF+200DKF hybrid composites with a 7.22%, 10.14%, and 12.94% improvement higher than those of CF composites respectively. Furthermore, the energy absorption of CF+200D KF hybrids was also 68.36%, 127.04%, and 13.33% higher than CF composites respectively. CT scan results and positive hybrid effects indicated that presented hybrids were the best choice for the safety of Li-ion batteries. In the future, these hybrids could be an ideal choice for the safety of Li-ion batteries compared to non-hybrids.
