Scintillation Response of BSO and BGO Single‐Crystal Scintillators

ABSTRACT This study investigates the scintillation response and luminescence properties of BSO and BGO single crystals for radiation spectrum measurements. BSO crystals grown by the Bridgman method (5 × 5 × 6 mm 3 ) were compared with BGO crystals of identical dimensions. The emission peaks were observed at 463 nm for BSO and 474 nm for BGO. Gamma‐ray measurements in the energy range of 31–1,333 keV show that BGO exhibits superior energy resolution compared to BSO. At 662 keV ( 1 3 7 Cs), BGO achieves an energy resolution of 9.30%, which is 19.65% better than that of BSO. This improvement is attributed to the higher light yield of BGO (∼7600 ph MeV − 1 ) compared to BSO (∼1800 ph MeV − 1 ). In contrast, BSO demonstrates better high‐energy radiation detection capability due to its higher effective atomic number. The responses of both crystals to alpha and beta particles were also investigated.

BSO crystals grown by the Bridgman method (5 × 5 × 6 mm 3 ) were compared with BGO crystals of identical dimensions. The emission peaks were observed at 463 nm for BSO and 474 nm for BGO.
