Origin and Role of Sinusoidal Waves in Physical Systems and Signal Theory
Sinusoidal waveforms appear throughout electromagnetic wave propagation, resonant elec- trical circuits, and signal transmission systems. This paper provides an intuitive physical expla- nation for why sinusoidal behavior arises naturally from field dynamics in free space and from energy exchange in oscillatory systems, rather than originating primarily as a mathematical construct. By examining electromagnetic wave propagation and the continuous exchange of en- ergy between electric and magnetic fields, the paper shows how smooth, repeating wave motion naturally emerges in physical space. Fourier analysis is discussed only as a descriptive frame- work that reflects this underlying physical behavior. The widespread use of sinusoidal models in physics, electronics, circuit design, and measurement systems is therefore driven mainly by their physical origin, with mathematics serving as a descriptive framework.
