Background- Opium use has historically been prevalent among tribal populations in Northeast India due to cultural and traditional practices. However, prolonged consumption has emerged as a significant public health concern because of its adverse health, social, and economic consequences. Objectives- To assess the pattern of opium use and its impact on the tribal inhabitants of Emphum Village, Namsai District, Arunachal Pradesh. Methods- A community-based cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among 30 participants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a structured interview schedule covering socio-demographic characteristics, pattern of opium use, and associated health, social, and economic impacts. Descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentage were used for analysis. Results- Among the participants, 73.3% were males and the majority belonged to the 31–40 years age group. Daily opium use was reported by 60% of participants, indicating significant dependency. Common health problems included weakness (40%), respiratory issues (26.7%), and insomnia (20%). Family disturbance was reported by 66.7% of participants, while 70% experienced financial burden due to opium use. Conclusion- The study highlights that opium use among tribal inhabitants of Emphum Village is highly prevalent and associated with significant health, social, and economic consequences. Community awareness, de-addiction services, and culturally sensitive interventions are urgently required.
