Impact of the UK Modern Slavery Act 2015 on a Global Scale: Results, Next Steps in the Fight against Modern Slavery, and Obstacles
Abstract Modern slavery, encompassing many forms such as slavery, servitude, forced labor, sexual exploitation, and human trafficking, is a significant challenge to the rule of law worldwide. The United Kingdom (UK) Modern Slavery Act 2015 (MSA) was a pivotal advancement, establishing one of the first comprehensive legal frameworks to combat these offenses in the modern era. The MSA established new criminal offenses, increased penalties, including life imprisonment, and implemented robust mechanisms for wealth confiscation, victim restitution, and protection within the criminal justice system. The paper examines the influence of the MSA in addressing contemporary slavery, both in the UK and elsewhere. It analyzes the impact of the MSA on policy discourse, its influence on international legislative trends, and its role in enhancing corporate accountability within supply chains. The efficacy and long-term viability of key components, such as the creation of the Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner position and protocols for victim support, are evaluated. The paper also examines the MSA’s contents and execution, underscoring the UK’s progressive leadership in anti-slavery initiatives and the act’s potential as a template for other countries. The research eventually examines the MSA’s progress and the difficulties and opportunities that await.
