Historical Roots and Present Realities: A Study of the Kaibortta Community of Assam
The present study examines the social, cultural, and religious background of the Kaibortta community in Assam, a culturally diverse state of India. Using mainly secondary data from books, official publications, and discussions with knowledgeable persons, the research explores the historical origin, socio-economic conditions, literacy patterns, and religious beliefs of the community. The study indicates that the Kaibortta community, historically associated with Dravidian origins, has played an important role in the socio-cultural fabric of Assam while facing economic and educational challenges. Their religious life reflects a blend of indigenous beliefs, Vaishnavite devotional traditions, and broader Indian spiritual influences. Despite progress in literacy and social awareness, issues such as economic backwardness, gender disparity in education, and remnants of caste discrimination still affect the community. The study highlights both the continuity of traditional values and gradual socio-cultural transformation among the Kaiborttas.
