Title

The notion of subject (SBJ) has been discussed in the literature. Both general literature and Turkish literature traditionally examine SBJs through their syntactic appearances instead of defining the notion itself. However, recent studies in Turkish provide another perspective for SBJs in Turkish. Good & Yu (2000, 2005), and Öztürk (2001) suggest that agreement (AGR) in Turkish may function as SBJ challenging traditional views on the notion constructed upon case, AGR, position, and so on. Considering the empirical data that has been observed and the proposals argued in the recent literature, in this study, we aim to answer two fundamental questions: Does Turkish have SBJs? If yes, then what would be the syntactic architecture for them? After outlining core problems and contemporary views towards SBJs, we claim two different architectures in Turkish as given below:(1) a. [TP SBJ [TP OBJ [TP [vP SBJ [v’ [VP OBJ V] v] T + AGR]]b. [TP TOPi [TP [vP PROi [v’ [VP OBJ V] v] T+AGRi]]In this study, we propose that in Turkish, there are two different architectures containing SBJs. In both structures, we discuss that the TP position in Turkish could be re-analysed as a topic position. Furthermore, we assume that agr in Turkish is SBJ, whereas overt pronouns are adjuncts base-generated in topic position discussed as TP here. We present our structure under control and Licensing arguing against the pro-drop analyses of Turkish.
