Effects of Clitoria ternatea Nanoemulsion (NECT) and Extract (ECT) on Improving Metabolic Syndrome Parameters

Clitoria ternatea (CT) contains antioxidants, such as flavonoids and anthocyanins, which may help treat metabolic syndrome (MetS), but these compounds have low solubility and absorption. The use of nanotechnology, specifically nanoemulsions, has been proposed as a method to enhance effectiveness. In this study, 30 Wistar rats were divided into five groups, namely normal (N), MetS (MetS rats which no treatment was given), Atorvastatin (MSA) at a dosage of 0.18 mg/200 g BW, nanoemulsion CT at a dosage of 40 mg/200 g BW (NECT), and the extract CT at a dosage of 80 mg/200 g BW (ECT). After adaptation, the rats were given a high-fat, high-fructose diet (HFHFD) for 14 days and continued treatment for seven days. Lipid profiles and blood glucose levels were measured before and after treatment. The results showed a decrease in low-density lipoprotein (LDL), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol, and random blood glucose (RBG) levels in the NECT group, while high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels increased. Similar improvements were also observed in the MSA and ECT groups. After treatment, LDL, TG, total cholesterol, and RBG levels were lower in the NECT group compared to the ECT group. The mean HDL levels were higher in the NECT group than in the ECT group. In conclusion, the administration of nanoemulsion CT (NECT) proved to be more effective in improving lipid profiles and blood sugar levels in rats with induced MetS.
