Rechten op het kruispunt van globale rechtvaardigheid en democratie. Politieke gelijkheid van herstel tot democratische participatie

The goals of democracy and global justice can be presented as standing at odds with each other. Democracy presupposes a bounded polity justified in prioritizing its own interests and those of its members over others'. Global justice moves from the antipodal premise that human interests deserve equal consideration regardless of polity membership. In this dissertation I consider how the notion of political equality, while commonly understood to apply among fellow citizens, can transcend (maintaining a consistent content) this apparent division and apply across national borders, without clashing with a commitment to bounded demoi. To this end, I look at three different kinds of rights that operate at the intersection of global and domestic justice and consider the ways in which they impact individuals' and peoples' autonomy and politicomoral standing. I start with the most 'international' case, discussing political equality between former colonized peoples and former colonizers, and how it may ground a right to rectification. I then move on to discuss a particular set of movement rights, and in particular their unwarranted link to citizenship status. Lastly, I consider the right to vote, and how political equality may call for citizenship requirements to be left behind.
