Electromagnetic Field Effects in Dialysis Membranes
ABSTRACT Electromagnetic field‐assisted solute transport through dialysis membranes is a promising strategy toward enhanced mass transfer and thereby improved biomedical therapies. The main effort of this paper is to study the impacts of EMF intensity on mass, momentum, and heat transport across a dialysis membrane using a coupled numerical model based on the finite element method. The model takes into consideration Joule heating, wall shear stress, and concentration polarization, thus providing a comprehensive understanding of the biophysical parameters for efficient dialysis. The Sherwood number increases by as the Hartmann number increases from to . The overall mass flux of the solute increases by 28% under such conditions. The maximum wall shear stress remains less than 1.2 Pa, and there is a gain in temperature due to Joule heating, limited to 2.3°C, thus keeping the operation within safe physiological limits. Consequently, the present work for controlled application of the EMF, which tunes dialysis performance and drug delivery without compromising membrane integrity, stands to offer various insights into the design of advanced membrane‐based biomedical devices.
