Organization and Humanization of Care in the Context of Cholera Management in Two Regions of Cameroun

Context: Since 2021, Cameroon has been regularly experiencing a series of cholera epidemics. The management of the of the April 2023 outbreak in the Centre and Littoral regions was notable due to its frequency across different communities and the measures taken in response. The epidemic highlighted structural, behavioral and social dysfunctions that called for an effective response based on field data and evidence. Consequently, the management of the cases led to an improved organization and humanization of care, contributing to a reduction in the fatality rate. Methodology: A mixed quantitative-qualitative study conducted to describe the socio-economic characteristics of the health facilities surveyed and to gain a deeper understanding of caregiver-patient relationships through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions. with 1634 participants. Results: Out of the 42 HFs sampled, 1,634 participants were included. The reception and quality of care were acceptable/ satisfactory / adequate in some. However, in others, the reception and management were associated with stigmatization and neglect of patients showing signs and symptoms of cholera. According to most officials interviewed, the stigmatization and neglect can be explained by the fear of being contaminated and the lack of trained staff in the field. Interpretation: The results indicate that cholera management in health facilities faces numerous barriers that significantly affect community perceptions and contribute to the high fatality rate of cholera.
