IoT-Enabled Smart City Infrastructure: Security and Management Framework for Sustainable Urban Development

Smart city initiatives leverage Internet of Things technology to optimize urban infrastructure management, improve service delivery, and enhance quality of life for residents. However, the large-scale deployment of IoT devices across urban environments creates significant security and management challenges that must be addressed to ensure sustainable and safe smart city operations. This paper presents an IoT-enabled framework for smart city infrastructure management that integrates security mechanisms at every layer of the architecture. The framework addresses device management, data security, communication security, and application security across diverse urban infrastructure domains including transportation, utilities, public safety, and environmental monitoring. We introduce a hierarchical security model that assigns security levels based on infrastructure criticality and data sensitivity. Experimental evaluation on a simulated smart city environment demonstrates that the framework provides effective security protection while maintaining the operational efficiency required for real-time infrastructure management.
