A novel continuous flow reactor with enhanced mixing with presence of tangential component of velocity for microwave based synthesis

Abstract In both batch and continuous modes, microwave irradiation has been shown to be an effective technique for the synthesis of several compounds. Although continuous flow microwave reactors are becoming increasingly popular for organic synthesis, it might be difficult to provide sufficient mixing inside the reactor. In order to solve this problem, the current work uses CFD simulations to build a generalized geometry. Three tangentially oriented entry and exit nozzles that add tangential velocity are incorporated into the proposed annular geometry. An increased rate of heat transfer in the suggested geometry was demonstrated by the modelling and experimental data. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the geometry, we performed redox titration reactions and saponification reactions with different molecular weights. The suggested geometry outperformed the coil-type geometry and the basic cylindrical geometry, according to the experiment results. In comparison to standard cylindrical and coil-type geometries, the selected design results in a 50 % reduction in pressure drop with an increase in energy efficiency, and a 30 % increase in steady-state conversion.
