The Structure, Dynamics, Phase Transitions, and Emerging Applications of Orientational Crystals

Orientational crystals, or orientationally disordered or plastic crystals, are a distinct category of condensed matter systems characterized by long-range translational order combined with partial to complete orientational disorder of the molecules. Unlike traditional crystals, which possess both positional and orientational order, orientational crystals allow for rotational dynamics within a structured lattice, showcasing interplay between molecular alignment and thermal energy that permits free rotation or large-amplitude jumps between orientations. Upon cooling, this orientational disorder can transition into frozen states known as orientational glass states. This research emphasizes the structural characteristics, thermodynamic behaviors, and phase transition mechanisms of orientational crystals. Key focal points include molecular rotational dynamics, entropy-driven stabilization, dielectric relaxation, and calorimetric signatures indicative of order-disorder transitions. Additionally, various experimental techniques such as X-ray diffraction, neutron scattering, differential scanning calorimetry, and dielectric spectroscopy are discussed for their effectiveness in investigating orientational dynamics. Theoretical frameworks, including symmetry analysis, configurational entropy evaluations, and molecular simulations, provide essential insights. Recent advancements in hybrid perovskites, organic molecular solids, and nanoscale assemblies further illustrate the significance of orientational disorder in technology, particularly in the fields of energy materials, pharmaceuticals, and functional soft matter. Thus, this research integrates fundamental concepts with contemporary trends, offering a thorough understanding of orientational crystal phases and their relevance to modern materials science.
