Humanitarian Crisis in Afghanistan Post-2021: Sectoral Impacts, Role of International Organizations, and Challenges in Aid Delivery: An Analytical Study

The humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan has escalated since the Taliban took control in August 2021, resulting in the rapid deterioration of political institutions, economic systems, and basic services. The sudden withdrawal of international financial assistance, the freezing of foreign reserves, and the disruption of development aid caused a serious economic decline, pushing millions into poverty and hunger. A large proportion of the population currently relies on humanitarian aid for basic survival, while malnutrition is widespread and unemployment is rampant, coupled with limited access to healthcare and education. This has had a devastating impact on key sectors such as food security, healthcare, economic stability, and education, especially on vulnerable populations, including women and children. International organisations such as the United Nations agencies, non-governmental organisations, and international financial institutions have been instrumental in alleviating the crisis by providing emergency food and health care support, as well as offering protection services. Nevertheless, humanitarian activities face major challenges such as a lack of funds, political limitations, restrictions on women employees, and the inability to access remote and war-torn areas. These issues point to the weakness of existing humanitarian frameworks and the need for more adaptive, inclusive, and politically neutral systems of global governance. The Afghanistan crisis, therefore, highlights the issue of enhancing international collaboration and developing long-term measures of humanitarian intervention in weak states.
