STHAULYA (OBESITY) IN AYURVEDA: PATHYA, APATHYA, DIET AND LIFESTYLE MANAGEMENT
Sthaulya (obesity) is described in Ayurveda as a disorder characterized by excessive accumulation of Meda dhatu (adipose tissue) resulting from Kapha predominance and impaired metabolism.[1-3] It is associated with reduced physical activity, impaired digestion, and improper dietary habits.[1] Classical Ayurvedic texts emphasize the importance of dietary regulation (Ahara), lifestyle modification (Vihara), and behavioral discipline in the prevention and management of obesity.[1-3] The concept of Pathya (wholesome regimen) and Apathya (unwholesome regimen) forms the cornerstone of treatment,[1-3] This review compiles classical dietary recommendations and lifestyle guidelines described for Sthaulya and interprets them in light of modern nutritional principles.[⁶] Understanding these classical recommendations can provide an integrative framework for the effective management of obesity.[1–⁴]
