The Effect of a Short Morning Session in Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour on Day-Long Productivity
The paper examines the potential of a short morning gaming session in the real-time strategy game Command & Conquer: Generals – Zero Hour as a tool of cognitive activation and productivity support throughout the day. It is argued that real-time strategy games impose substantial demands on divided attention, rapid task switching, working memory, prioritization, and decision-making under time pressure. Under conditions of moderate duration and self-regulation, a short morning session may function as a psychophysiological warm-up that facilitates the transition from a passive waking state to an active working mode. Particular attention is paid to the possible transfer of in-game demands to academic and professional contexts that require planning, multitasking, and sustained attentional control. At the same time, the paper emphasizes that any positive effect is conditional rather than universal: excessive play, emotional overarousal, or interference with sleep and routine may reduce or negate the expected benefits. It is concluded that a short, time-bounded morning session in Generals – Zero Hour can be interpreted as a potentially useful cognitive priming practice before an intellectually demanding day.
