FOAM-BASED DRUG DELIVERY SYSTEMS: A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW

Multiphase systems seen in nature and daily life, foams are essential in many applications, especially drug delivery. Foams, which are composed of gas separated by liquid or solid lamellae with a large surface area and low thickness, are not very stable. They have historically been used in medications for topical medicinal or defensive purposes. However, the distinct physicochemical structure of both liquid and solid foams creates new therapeutic potential, such as parenteral drug delivery implants that serve as tissue scaffolds. Foams can also be used as oral controlled drug delivery systems, providing the possibility of targeted or prolonged drug delivery. The unique benefits and characteristics of foams that increase their usefulness in pharmacotherapy are covered in the article.
