Digital Therapeutics and Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Mobile Health Applications in Contemporary Pharmacy Practice

Background: Digital transformation in healthcare has accelerated the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based digital therapeutics (DTx) and mobile health (mHealth) applications. These technologies are reshaping patient care delivery by enabling data-driven, personalized, and remote healthcare solutions, with significant implications for pharmacy practice. Objective: This review aims to explore the role of AI-integrated digital therapeutics and mHealth applications in modern pharmacy practice, focusing on their clinical applications, technological evolution, benefits, challenges, and future perspectives. Methods: A literature-based review approach was adopted using scientific databases including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Relevant studies were identified using keywords such as “digital therapeutics,” “artificial intelligence in healthcare,” “mobile health applications,” “pharmacy practice,” and “AI-driven healthcare systems.” Articles focusing on clinical applications, technological integration, regulatory frameworks, and pharmacy-related outcomes were included, while irrelevant and non-English publications were excluded. Key Findings: The review highlights that AI enhances digital therapeutics through predictive analytics, personalized treatment planning, and real-time monitoring. mHealth applications support medication adherence, remote patient monitoring, and chronic disease management. Integration of AI with DTx and mHealth improves clinical decision-making, optimizes pharmacotherapy, and strengthens patient engagement. However, challenges such as data privacy concerns, lack of standardization, regulatory limitations, and digital inequality remain significant barriers. Conclusion: AI-based digital therapeutics and mHealth applications represent a transformative advancement in pharmacy practice, enabling more efficient, personalized, and accessible healthcare delivery. Their integration into clinical and community pharmacy settings has the potential to significantly improve therapeutic outcomes, although robust regulatory frameworks and further research are essential for safe and effective implementation.
